"The starting point was Beethoven's Sonata op. 111, but this little piece by Scriabin exemplifies an idea, and the title is ideal for the whole CD. The idea is a journey from the earthly to the light, it is about the question of how life and death are connected. Now you can say that it is generally a function of music that it catapults you into a new level of consciousness.

But I think the four works on this CD do that in a special way, they radiate a tremendous power. They reflect different personal worlds, were written at different times and spring from different genres and sound ideas, yet they all have a similar function. Strauss is about a terminally ill person who suffers, but at the end of his life ascends to new spheres and finds redemption. Beethoven is also initially about something threatening, earthly, but he looks at it more philosophically.

Beethoven does not reveal much of himself directly, everything is subject to a strict, architectural form, and that is why his music seems to be carved in stone. But in his last piano sonata, he crosses a boundary, one senses the jagged world he is divining, here he has finally expanded the form so much that he can ascend to new spheres. „Der Ausgangspunkt war Beethovens Sonate op. 111, aber dieses kleine Stück von Skrjabin steht exemplarisch
für eine Idee, und der Titel eignet sich ideal für die ganze CD. Die Idee ist eine Reise vom Irdischen zum Licht, es
geht um die Frage, wie Leben und Tod miteinander in Verbindung stehen. Nun kann man sagen, es sei generell
eine Funktion der Musik, dass sie einen in eine neue Bewusstseinsebene katapultiert.

Aber ich denke, die vier
Werke auf dieser CD tun das in besonderer Weise, sie strahlen eine ungeheure Kraft aus. Sie spiegeln
unterschiedliche persönliche Welten, sind zu verschiedenen Zeiten entstanden und entspringen verschiedenen
Gattungen und Klangideen, trotzdem haben sie alle eine ähnliche Funktion. Bei Strauss geht es um einen
todkranken Menschen, der leidet, doch am Ende seines Lebens zu neuen Sphären aufsteigt und Erlösung findet.

Bei Beethoven geht es auch zunächst um etwas Bedrohliches, Irdisches, aber er betrachtet das eher
philosophisch. Beethoven gibt nicht direkt viel von sich preis, alles unterliegt einer strengen, architektonischen
Form, und deshalb wirkt seine Musik wie in Stein gemeißelt. Aber in seiner letzten Klaviersonate überschreitet er
eine Grenze, man spürt die zerklüftete Welt, die er erahnt, hier hat er die Form schließlich so sehr erweitert, dass

He gave highly acclaimed concerts for example in Berlin, Munich, Milan, Moscow, Madrid, London, Paris, New York, Amsterdam, Budapest, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul, as well as at great music festivals, including Klavier-Festival Ruhr, Aldeburgh / UK, the Gilmore Festival in Michigan / USA, La Roque d’Anthéron / France, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Husum Festival (“Raritäten der Klaviermusik”) and the Miami International Piano Festival.
He has performed with conductors such as Valery Gergiev, Philippe Herreweghe, Lothar Zagrosek and Marek Janowski, and made important debuts, among others with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Paavo Järvi, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Jaap van Zweden and the Hungarian National Philharmony together with Zsolt Hamar. During the worldwide lockdown in November 2020 he debuted with Mariinsky Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev and the Ural Philhamonic in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

Von Eckardstein played 8 recitals during the prestigious series “Meesterpianisten” at Concertgebouw Amsterdam. In 2022 he was invited for the 7th time at the Klavier Festival Ruhr, Germany.

The artist won prizes at numerous noteworthy international competitions. In 2003 he has been awarded the first prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels. In 2002 He received the “European Culture Prize” and the “Echo Classic Prize.”

Von Eckardstein’s education in the musical arts was predominately shaped by his teachers Prof. Barbara Szczepanska, Prof. Karl-Heinz Kämmerling and Prof. Klaus Hellwig, University of Arts, Berlin, where he also successfully completed his studies (Konzertexamen). In an additional course of study at the International Piano Academy Lake Como, Italy, he profited from further instruction and inspiration. He has been teaching masterclasses at many places, among others in South Korea, Finland, Belgium and at the University of Arts Berlin.

Chamber music also plays a significant role in his repertoire with performances at festivals such as the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, Finland, Delft Chamber Music Festival, Netherlands, and the Risør Chamber Music Festival, Norway, where he appeared with cellist Heinrich Schiff. His current partners are Isang Enders, Sophia Jaffé, Isabelle van Keulen, Igor Levit, to name only a few. In 2015 he founded the chamber concert series “Klangbrücken” at Konzerthaus Berlin together with violinist Franziska Hölscher.

Von Eckardstein‘s comprehensive repertoire spans the baroque period up through music of the 21st century. As such, he has premiered several works of contemporary composers, in particular the American Sidney Corbett. One of his special focuses is late romantic piano music of less known composers, especially Nicolai Medtner.
CD recordings with compositions by Medtner, Scriabin, Wagner, Schubert, Schumann, Debussy and others are highly regarded. His album of Dupont´s cycle “La maison dans les dunes” was awarded with “Diapason d´Or”. His album featuring Schumann´s Kreisleriana and Adolf Jensen was released in March 2023.

He is known for his operas, which include Der Rosenkavalier, Elektra, Die Frau ohne Schatten and Salome; his Lieder, especially his  Four Last Songs; his tone poems, including Don Juan, Death and Transfiguration, and An Alpine Symphony; and other instrumental works such as Metamorphosen and his Oboe Concerto. Strauss was also a prominent conductor in Western Europe and the Americas, enjoying quasi-celebrity status as his compositions became standards of orchestral and operatic repertoire. Strauss, along with Gustav Mahler, represents the late flowering of German Romanticism after Richard Wagner, in which pioneering subtleties of orchestration are combined with an advanced harmonic style.

Initially, he made a name for himself by composing large-scale cycles and verbose titles. At several occasions, Messiaen explicated his intentions, which often included theology, symbology, and extensive considerations of colour, church modes and rhythm. Perhaps ironically, this colour composer was able to leave his mark on the less colourful avant-garde of the 1950s as well. Its longest scene contains a giant bird choir, with bird species from Umbria (the home country of Saint François) to new Caledonia.

He could not play from sight, but studied the score and played the compositions by heart afterwards. He was also a gifted improviser. Scriabin primarily wrote for solo piano and orchestra. His music progressively evolved over the course of his life, although the evolution was very rapid and especially brief when compared to most composers. His earliest piano pieces resemble those of Frédéric Chopin. The works from his middle and late period use very unusual harmonies and textures.
From 1904 till 1910 Scriabin lived in western Europe, primarily in Switzerland, but also in northern Italy, Paris and Brussels. After his return to Russia he found himself in the middle of a circle of admirers who were attracted to his exalted and mystic ideas. During the last years of his life he worked on a grandiose manifestation, a Gesamtkunstwerk, Mysterium, in which all arts and all people would have been united. He left only sketches of the prelude to this piece (L'action préalable) and large amounts of text.
